And Finally...My Thai Blog

***Note: the pictures are too friggin big to add! I will have to shrink them first. Otherwise, email me and I will send you an invite to my webshots page, and you can check my online album out.

Cast of Characters

Oliv – trip mastermind and planner, queen of obssessive compulsiveness
Donna – the independent woman with a slight thing for farangs
John – perpetually silent but secretly capable of bouts of drama
Jason – looks like a twelve year old, drinks like a fish with an ulcer and sleeps like the dead
Me – brattita extraordinaire with perpetual wanderlust, the need to explore and a slight obsession with elephants

Disclaimer: for those who are reading this who are actual characters, no offense is intended. I have tried as much as possible to put a lighthearted humorous (but somewhat sarcastic – this is after all, me) touch to all that happened, in line with our agreement that “what happens in thailand, stays in thailand”. As such, no censored or classified discussions have been included in any of these entries. My apologies for any entry that may give offense to your persons.

Pratsa!

My trip officially began with a text message at 430pm on Sunday afternoon. It was Oliv, saying that she had just left the house for the airport. It came a minute before my mother knocked on the door asking why I hadnt started getting ready yet, given that I had to be in the airport at least two hours before the 720 flight to Bangkok. I took a quick shower, threw some last minute things together, strapped on my travel bag and headed off to the airport. I got there in fifteen minutes. By then, Jason was leaving his house, Oliv was rounding the corner, John was going through immigration and Donna, being the most excited apparently, was already waiting at the boarding gate.

For the first time in my life my mother did not wait for me to go through the ticket check before leaving. She just kissed me goodbye and went off. End of story. It was a pleasant surprise. Thanks, Mom.

I waited for Oliv before checking in so we got seats together. We waited for Jason at the smokers lounge where I had funny tasting tea and he bought us cigs for the trip (4 packs) since I was ending my 3 and a half month drought by smoking on vacation. (Note: I smoked an average of 4-6 sticks, 6 out of 8 days during the trip, and have not smoked since. Not bad.) After discussing the contents of our various suitcases and John’s apparent need to bring dress pants, dress shoes and a dress shirt – he ended up not packing any of them – we made our way to the boarding gate to join him and Donna.

Having had ample time to bond, both John & Donna decided that we should all have pseudo travel personalities and names to go with them. As such, John became Malcom, venture capitalist – even if he didn’t know what the heck he was a capitalist of – Donna became Tatiana, the starlet with a budding acting career (read: potetntial bold star) , Jason became Mike, freshman college student on sem break while I was Ana, his Ate in 3rd year college also on sem break. Oliv was our classmate, who was secretly a princess trying to experience a more down to earth life. (She thought of that one all on her own) Since she couldn’t think of a name I started calling her Princess Cariboo after the early nineties Phoebe Cates movie.

The flight was mostly uneventful. Since there were a lot of free seats, Jason and I took a row each and ended up curled with two seats each since the middle arm rest could not be lifted. I had my feet stuck out on the aisle and it kept getting bumped. By the time it occurred to me to switch around, it was time to land. Oliv had the best deal as she had 3 seats to herself since Jason & I moved. She got the window seat, too.

The first thing we heard when we landed was “Pratsa” which is probably Thai for announcement but it ran through all our heads the entire trip. Donna, in particular, does a very good impersonation of a Thai woman doing the flight landing and boarding announcements. Since we werent sure of the rates, we changed very little money. I changed about five dollars only while Oliv changed pesos and Jason withdrew from the atm via credit card. Since Jason had the most money, he ended up paying for most of everything for the first day and a half. Fortunately, Oliv is obsessive about details and the boys are very good accountants so everything we ever shared was well covered and reimbursed.

We took a 1000 baht van rental to the Oakwood Premiere Apartments where we would be crashing for the night with my friend Jake. Jake has lived in Thailand on and off for the past few years, both for his previous and current jobs. He works for IBM now and does some sort of sales combo checking on equipment or something like that for banks and stuff. Heck, Im not really sure what he does but the company pays for everything and he gets to hang out in cool places, so its all good. Jake took along his friend Rio to join us for dinner. Rio works on an oil rig alternatively for a full month then has a whole month off. His job (and Jake’s) really fascinated all of us because none of us had ever met anyone who worked in the middle of the ocean before – plus he’d been to Trinidad and Tobago.

Jake took us to what was supposed to be a German Beer Garden, except that everything was in Thai, and they served, of all things, crispy pata. It was here that we learnt our first lesson on Thai music. Apparently, Thais are fond of music that goes back to a bygone era: i.e. the 80s or even earlier. The words classic rock werent even enough to describe how far back the music went, even if the band did dress up like they came from the 80s. As Jake, who has hit the big 3-0 said, “Hindi ko panahon yan. Panahon ng tatay mo yan!!!” Any music that was recognizable was really old., and there were people dancing – if you could call it that – to whatever it was. And it was there that we learnt lesson number two: Thai people can’t dance. Of course, our theory is that it isnt entirely their fault. How can you dance to classic rock? All I remember from the Bon Jovi era was that we used to head bang. All the people in that bar looked as though they were attempting to channel trance combo Beyonce combo any aging rock star from the big hair period with their arms flailing about. It was as if they were going to take out their lighters and start swaying them around any second.

The food was really good – first of our food trip in Thailand – and everyone except me had a jug of beer or so from the three liter tube thingy that was positioned next to our table. We ate a whole darn lot and Jake & Rio spent the time educating us on the mysteries of Thai people and their weird dancing. The staff was very friendly though, and they took the time to explain the Thai songs to us. That, in essence is the best thing about Thailand. The people are very, very firendly and very, very helpful. Their english sucks sometimes but they make up for it in effort. They are wonderful people, 80s music notwithstanding.

We ended the evening at Jake’s apartment, watching The Girl Next Door on DVD. Jason and Donna crashed on the couch, Jake, Oliv & I crashed on the bed, and John martyred himself by crashing on the floor. Personally I discovered two things: 1) Donna only snores when she’s tired and the tiredness is work related because we didn’t hear a peep from her the entire trip and 2) Jake snores. Pretty loudly.

The next morning we all went to have the Oakwood buffet breakfast. I conned Jake into paying the excess for my breakfast (I had only 200 baht after all) by promising him a Lord of the Rings DVD for Christmas, which I probably would have gotten him anyway. Jake and I have this thing where we get each other real DVDs for Christmas. Last year I got him To Have and Have Not off Amazon and he got me Pirates of the Caribbean with all the lovely special features. This year I think I’ll probably ask him to get me a Jamaica shirt and a shitload of indie films from the stall I never found in Chattuchak (Jakie are you reading this? :P). We all thoroughly enjoyed the breakfast, Donna alone had 6 servings (that’s plates not pieces) of bacon. John skipped breakfast to take a nap and the rest of us lounged about while Jake got ready to leave for Manila. His flight was at least two hours ahead of ours so he left way before we even got our shit together.

After one final picture (warning: we took pictures everywhere, like the camera whores that we were) we split up to take cabs to the airport for our flight to Phuket. Oliv & Donna’s cab driver spoke better English and was a bit smarter than ours. We had been informed that Air Asia was an international flight, and that we should get ourselves to Bangkok International Airport. Oliv and Donna’s cab driver conferred with the guards and they found out that flights to Phuket were domestic, so they ended up in the right airport while Jason, John & I were stuck in the international airport. We were advised repeatedly to take a cab but somehow we discovered there was a connecting walkway so we attempted to make our way to domestic, traversing through all 700 meters with John and his giant-has no wheels-suitcase.

It was like a sitcom gone wrong, to say the least. Prior to leaving we had all weighed in our suitcases and John’s by far was the heaviest, due to size alone. It was built for long term trips to america and since he may have packed two of everything it was extra heavy. He got himself a cart and it was fine… until we got to the part where the carts werent allowed anymore. Fortunately we bumped into this dude who was driving one of those cart things that could have passengers sitting on them, so he loaded up our luggage and the rest of us and we made it through the second half of the journey – including a really, really long tunnel – without too much effort.

I don’t think we wouldve made it otherwise. As it was, John was starving by the end and ran off to grab a hamburger while the rest of us waited for the japanese food at a sitdown restaurant. Donna & I had yummy chocolate drinks while Oliv & Jason pondered the strangeness of their dry teriyaki. We finished the meal, took pictures as usual and headed off to check in. We spent the waiting period discussing the merits of hanging out in Phi Phi or Pha Nga (Phi Phi won) and since it was first come first serve seating, rushed to get to the head of the line. We got pretty good seats and then off we were to Phuket, for the real start of our adventure.

In the meantime...

Am back from Thailand and will post details on the journey soon but in the meantime Im at home, just chillin' so to speak. Listening to my new (pirated) cds and catching up on stuff via email. Also really enjoying my david beckham book - which cost 700 baht at the airport - and am glad to be alone at home since mom's gone out of town. So far have just washed my hair - a feat once you see my ganja girl picture - and am about to have a very late lunch. I dont plan to do much this week, just catch up with friends, go to pilates, update my blog and maybe structure a few things around my room better. Otherwise, its rest, rest, rest.

Ive posted a picture of me on the way to the airport at Phuket with my newly styled hair in its full glory till I get the rest of the blog going. I love my hair :)

On Packing, Bazaars & Leaving the Kids Behind

In about five or so hours we'll be leaving on our trip to Thailand. This has been a long time coming and we have been planning this since May. Originally we had planned to take the train from Thailand into Malaysia or the other way around but we decided against it once we discovered Air Asia and cheap flights. We had to cut Malaysia out too, because it was too expensive given the limited days allowed by our tour package (8, with the last 4 days in Bangkok). Tonight we're going to be crashing at my friend Jake's place for the night before we head out to Phuket in the morning. We'll be back in Bangkok on Thursday, staying at the Mandarin.

A few days ago it finally occured to our bosses that it might not be such a good idea to have four of us gone in one go. Unfortunately for them, they approved our leaves in May - probably without thinking, too - and everything has also been bought and paid for, so they are stuck. One of my companions had an interesting conversation with our big bald white happy nosed boss in america where he tried his damnest not to get her to go on leave without actually asking her to. Of course, we're going anyway.

I don't exactly feel guilty for leaving all the shit behind - we are four out of a thirteen person team - but I feel sorry for them because they will have to take up all our shit. Considering that everyone in our team does the work of at least 3 people (five if you're me and donna, at least) when one of us goes its like shit hits the fan, big time. Case in point: I have been fielding calls & email all day from poor Marty, who has ended up with most of the stuff we've left behind. Our first day gone and he's already done a straight shift and so have some of the other kids. This is all making me feel like a mom that's left her kids to survive on take out food for a two weeks while she's on vacation, but nevertheless, I have faith that everyone will survive without too much damage.

In the meantime, there was some confusion about how many kilos we could have on the flight to phuket, which lead all of us to some frantic packing & unpacking. I had to help one of my friends with his packing as he seemed to think that dress shirts, dress pants and dress shoes plus three pairs of pajamas and a whole shitload of other stuff was necessary for a week out of the country. As for me, I felt my suitcase - which is about a fourth full, max, and has so much space in it that it has about a whole hand's length left for stuff - was too heavy by itself so mum suggested we go out and get one, given the whole kilo confusion. (see my picture of my red fuzzy giant suitcase) We thought we could only have 13 kilos but the website now says 15 so I think we are safe. My suitcase weighs 13.6 kilos with stuff in it so we didnt have to buy a lighter one. The lightest suitcase in the house I lent to donna for the same trip. In the end, I stuck to red fuzzy - more space for shopping - and ended up in a bazaar!

Half the stuff in that bazaar looked like it either came from Thailand or from the export overrun packing boxes from the factories that make gap, old navy, ann taylor, etc. I bought a pair of shorts that fit (i own only one pair that does, thanks to squats) and a cute bag made of coconut shells with funky prints. I wouldve gotten the mahjong print as well but the bags were expensive. I was lucky that I was with my mother, who dragged me along, so she got the bag :D

Right now I am at home, having finished packing and getting a little sleepy. Plan to leave by 430pm to make the 2 hour before the flight cut off. Have packed as many legal drugs as I am able and am hoping that none of us develop any diseases while we are there. I am prepared for the weather and armed with a new bikini am hoping to get a kick ass tan, weather notwithstanding. Don't think I'll be able to post till I get back, unless we all decide to check out an internet cafe, so here's to our long awaited vacation! Sawasdee!

Gaudi - Casa Batlo Posted by Hello

Gaudi & Other Things

Yesterday I went back to work and spent, in fairness, only 11 hours, mostly scheduling and organizing and writing email. I was a bit tired after but went to mass and had dinner in north park. For some reason there was pain in my leg and i was kinda limping on the left side. Don't know why, so I bought salonpas (one of my best friends!) pasted it on and hoped for the best. Am having nice masseuse come over today to fix it.

Mom went to see Spanish modern dance last night, by a basque troupe. She said it was very interesting. Am off to see a Spanish film today, part of the film fest. I looked through the little booklet that mum has and there are a lot of movies I want to see, as well as the Gaudi exhibition in the Ayala Museum. I love Gaudi. When I went to Barcelona - 7 years ago, its been that long - we took a tour and we saw La Sagrada Familia and all the other buildings he designed. The picture above is of a building that, if I remember correctly, has now been converted into a series of expensive apartments. The tour guide mentioned that a long time ago people did not really like it because they thought it was too weird. I would love to live in this building though. Will talk more about this after I see the exhibit.

People have been asking if Im in London because of my blog - I wish! Im still here in sunny old Manila, prepping for three trips (whee!). Im currently looking through stuff to do and see and places to eat in while we're in Thailand - leaving next Sunday!!! Plus Im off to submit my visa stuff for Australia tomorrow. On the side, Lance & I have been discussing our digs in Cebu, since we're both scheduled to go next month. So far we've decided to get a house, so that we can all share and the rest of the members of our team will have a place to stay in right away, since we're all going to be rotational. Im pretty excited for all these things and am really wishing that I get better! Cebu looks like a good place to get healthy and relax. Am hoping the vacation to Thailand will do me some good, its been a very long time since I went on vacation (January) for real, and not just because I had to.

I did it!!!

I have changed the template of my blog!!! It is now the London Tube! Yahooo!!!

Mind the Gap, y'all!

One Undignified Rant

Current Soundtrack of the Day: U2 - Achtung Baby

So today was my "deferred off". I ran a couple of errands, most of which involved buying underwear and discovering that thanks to a combination of hormones, pectoral exercises and the fact that all the stuff in Marks & Spencer is now "Asian Size" (meaning, they must be built for tiny oriental women) I had to get something more than I was used to. How it is possible that I am 2 sizes and a cup size bigger than the original I will leave to the explanation of my gyneacologist who said i needed the medicine in the first place. (Someday soon I will add a list of diseases that I have to this column)

That said, I went home. To work. I have been working at home since I got home. This is not fair. When I say work at home, it usually means I have to draft some proposal or edit some damn thing. Not fix the schedule and training and run around like a headless chicken organizing other people's lives. That's why I didnt go to work in the first place!!!

I was supposed to be looking for nice places to visit in Phuket, which none of us have ever been to before and find a nice template for my blog. (Damn, I have to relearn my html. And figure out the frames thing.) On the bright side, I did finally make the registration cut off time for photobucket so here are our pictures from the weekend:

Erica & Chris, DJ, Donna & JP Do Some Damage at Max Brenners

Yaaay! Now on to more complicated posts once I figure out how to do everything else. I also tried to put in a picture of me for my profile but apparently you cant do it if the picture is too big. I looked through my pictures and the only tiny one I have is of Ryan, my team mate, looking like a drunken sea monster. A round, mr potatohead like drunken sea monster. So Im off to edit one of my pictures to make it nice and tiny so that I will finally have a picture in my profile (in fairness, I know how to do that)

I've decided one simple thing: If I Wake Up I Will Go To Work. I have told my boss I will go on day off but bah, humbag, Im probably going to end up working anyway, and there's so much shit to fix, plus if I dont go to work when I get back, haaaay. Never mind.

Anyway, I have got to get back to the grind and finish what I am doing. If only I could reward myself with a chocolate bar but noooo I can't have sweets because I have a cough. All because of a bloody electric fan. And dust. Im stuck having chamomile tea and am too lazy to get up and turn on the liiiiight. Must. Try. To. Be. More. Peaceful.

Overrrr and Oooooout. Phwwwraoooar.

Im sick & Orlando Bloom is getting married.

So we went out this weekend. My throat was a little dry but I persisted anyway. Had an interesting night out, played some games at timezone - was totally pathetic at air hockey but had fun anyway - watched resident evil 2 and then had dinner at grappa's with the clients and people from work (see pictures, which i'll get up eventually!) and sat under the ceiling fan. Tried to sit in the middle where I wouldnt get hit but I guess it didnt work... neither did the chocolate from max brenner, which was absolutely delicious. Woke up with a cough, promptly went to the doctor, got drugged up and tried to rest.

Was not able to sleep much bec kept waking up to cough but I went to work anyway. By the middle of my shift I was coughy and wasnt my usual "vibrant self". Wasn't even hungry (How is that possible?). Went home with out OT - another first - and promptly tried to knock myself out. Had a massage, which let out all the stuff in my nose, turning it into a post-nasal drip from hell and could not get warm for the life of me. Took a while and a lot of comforters. Am feeling better now but I am not going to work tomorrow! I know better, damn it.

Really, really looking forward to my vacation now.

Am reading my mail, including the gossip sheet and dang, it says Orlando is getting married and that Jude might be. They havent been bachelors for very long! How sad. There goes my eyecandy... off to sweat some more :P

Dang, i'll figure out how to insert pictures the natural way later... :P

Ulcerrrrific

I woke up due to major acidic activity. I ate 2 pancakes, a sausage and a slice of toast with peanut butter and I still woke up hungry. So I did what I always do when I have an ulcer attack, I threw up. Then I went to get food. I had noodle soup, and I threw it up. I had Skyflakes dry crackers, and I threw it up. Im waiting for my tum tum to settle before I attempt to eat the arrozcaldo that Nene cooked.

I missed my Pilates class bec of my tummy, which is sad, bec its like p650 down the drain as its buy appointment only and you forfeit if you dont go. I went to see Selle's blog today, its so nice. Must relearn html so I can make mine nicer as well.

My company is sending me to Cebu for 6 weeks (end of Nov to 1st week of Jan) and I know have to figure out a way to tell my mother and deal with my ulcer when i get there. I can just imagine myself sitting on the floor of this toilet in a studio apartment chucking my insides out all by myself, then getting up to heat a pathetic bowl of soup and surviving on skyflakes. How sad.

At least I think I should get to go to the beach quite often, and thats good enough for me. I love the beach! :)
